With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I wanted to share 5 of my favorite Valentine’s Day activities that your second graders will love! Be sure to grab the freebies and make the day both fun and educational!
1. Throw a Valentine’s Day math party
I like to make the most of holiday celebrations by having a math party! That way everybody is engaged, behaviors are at a minimum, and my students are having fun AND still learning! I’m happy, they’re happy, and admin is happy! Yay!
Make it festive and fun by covering your desks in butcher paper. I set up Valentine’s Day math centers around the room and students can choose which center to work on. The only rule is that everybody must be working somewhere.Click HERE to see my Valentine’s Day math centers for 2nd and 3rd grade.
2. Download free Valentine cards
Print these cute Valentine’s cards for your students and pass them out with mini cans of Play Doh from the dollar store. Use the Play Doh to do measurement math activities with the free worksheet below!

3. Make your valentines into a math game!
This Valentine’s Day activity is a fun one to do with Play Doh. Have your students use their new Play Doh treat to do measurement math tasks! Just add dice and a ruler and use it for your math party.

Students start by making a short snake with their Play Doh, roll the dice, then roll our their snake the number of times on the die. they then measure i either inches or centimeters and find the difference in length to see how long their snake grew with each turn. It’s fun and low prep!
4. Try a new take on the Valentine’s Day mailbox
A couple of years ago I did a Superhero theme in my classroom. To incorporate that in our Valentine’s Day celebrations we made these Superhero city mailboxes for collecting valentines. Students wrote kindness cards for all of their classmates i the days leading up to the 14th. They got to deliver them along with their valentines into everybody’s mailbox.
These make such a great bucket filler and community building activity and the smiles are priceless as students read the kindness cards from their classmates. Click HERE to find the resource. See more of how I use Superhero themed kindness activities in my classroom in this post.
5. Make a Valentine Bulletin Board You Can Leave Up For Months
Since the MLK holdiay, our 100th day, and Valentine’s Day fell so close together my teammates and I decided to work smarter not harder. We created a 100 Dreams for the World bulletin board by having our students write their 100 dreams for the world. Our 3-in-1 bulletin board turned out so beautifully and it filled our hallway with wishes for the world written by our students. Were so moved by some of the things they wrote. LindaI love seeing all of the valentine boxes! So many of my kiddos brought hand made valentines that were just adorable! One of my girls even wore a bun shaped like a heart!
